Trelleborg coastal city
Trelleborg has a unique geographical location thanks to its position in the middle of the Öresund region and the Baltic Sea, and being close to Malmö, Lund, and Copenhagen. The Port of Trelleborg is the gateway to the continent while also being an important import and export channel for Sweden.
In 2011, the Port Company took the first steps towards a move to the east, something which was prompted by demands by the shipping companies’ for longer quays, deeper pools, and more room for manoeuvre. For the city, the move means that land in the south-west is released for further development, precisely where urban districts are planned to be created, and now making that possible – without the need to use valuable agricultural land.
Coastal City 2025
Since 2016 the ’Coastal City 2025’ project has aimed to further develop Trelleborg as an attractive city in which to live and work.
’Coastal City 2025’ is an extensive urban development project which requires investments in terms of business, infrastructure, and just over 7,000 new homes, all in a seafront location. The project jumps upon Trelleborg’s potential, while also utilising the municipality’s strategic location and taking an holistic approach when it comes to the city being able to regain contact with the sea.
Three sub projects
New infrastructure solution relieve the city
By improving the western ring road, and at the same time building an eastern ring road, car traffic and freight transport can be redirected around the city. This enables development in a new urban area alongside the city center and the sea, as well as making good use of the unique location for logistics east of the city.
The investment in infrastructure also improves the internal logistics in the Port of Trelleborg while ensuring that the port will continue to manage the growing number of units passing through.
Business investment at Business center Trelleborg
Within the eastern business area, close to the port, new ring road and existing railway tracks, the municipality plans for check-in, parking spaces and logistics operations. Business center Trelleborg will be a place where existing companies can develop together with new establishments. This is a unique location for logistics and reloading of goods between road, rail and shipping.
Urban development in the old port area (”Sea city”) and the city center
The old port area and a nearby industrial area are transforming to hold a mix of housing, business premises and attractive meeting places. More than five kilometers of quayside will be available for residents and visitors. The city and the sea meet once again.
